In Search of Sherlock Holmes at 187 N. Gower Street
London's 187 N. Gower Street, as all fans of the BBC series "Sherlock" know, is the stand-in filming location for the entrance to Sherlock and John's flat at 221B Baker Street. During most of the year this innocuous black door next to Speedy's Café wears mismatched numbers and acts as the humble front door to someone else's flat.
But for those brief days of stardom during the filming of BBC's "Sherlock," 187 N. Gower Street dons those magic numbers, 221B and resides on Baker Street. Fans line the usually quiet avenue behind barricades and hope to get a photo of Benedict Cumberbatch or Martin Freeman, passing in and out of this very door. (The interior scenes of Sherlock's flat are shot elsewhere on a movie set, but the inside of Speedy's Café next door has been featured in a scene or two.)
Speedy's actually is a café year round where the locals like to stop for cuppa or perhaps a sandwich and a jacketed potato. There's one small board inside which displays a bit of fans' artwork, but nothing else to broadcast its connection with the series. The staff is friendly, low key and tolerant of fans who want to take their picture "on location."
So for all my fellow Sherlockians, the next time you're in London, I recommend that you stop by Speedy's café for a bite to eat and perhaps a photo or two. If you time your visit correctly, you may just meet the Worlds Only Consulting Detective and his colleague racing off to solve a crime, for this is where the Game begins!
