What's So Great About Christian Writers' Conferences?
Not quite a year into writing my first book, I was at the point where I needed to find out what this writing thing was all about. There's only so much you can do by yourself. I took a step of faith and attended my first writers' conference. I started off big, with a national conference that had over 500 attendees. Whew, talk about overwhelming!
I chose the ACFW conference because it was in my hometown so I could visit my sister afterwards and secondly because it was a Christian writers' conference. Yes, there are Christian writers' conferences and writing groups. I belong to several now including the American Christian Fiction Writers, Brandon Christian Writers and Word Weavers International.
My second conference was about four months later. The Florida Christian Writers' Conference was on a somewhat smaller scale and at least I had some idea of how things worked by now. It was a wonderful experience.
What's so great about Christian writers' conferences beyond the professional development? It's the fellowship, meeting and worshipping with other Christians who are travelling the same road. It's the prayer, the encouragement, and the learning how to dodge pitfalls from a brother or sister in Christ who has climbed out of the pit and lived to tell the tale. It's meeting people who can make a difference in your journey: a fellow writer who becomes your prayer partner, a writing coach who pushes you beyond your former limitations, an editor who takes an interest and gives you hope.
Most of all, it's knowing that you're learning to use the gifts God has given you to the best possible advantage. It's being on a mission to change the world for the better and knowing you're not alone.
